him. In 1916 he was made professor of theoretical physics at the University of Copenhagen and in 1917 a member of the Royal Danish Academy. Most importantly, in 1921 the university’s Institute for Theoretical Physics was established for him. The institute provided the first center for international cooperation in atomic research. During his lifetime no less than 600 students and colleagues worked there, despite the interruption caused by World War II. In 1922, the year after Einstein had received
